Today is Treaty Day in Oakville! In recognition of the signing of Treaty 22, Mayor Burton and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation Gimaa Stacey LaForme took part in a special ceremony at the Oakville Museum. Oakville resides on the treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, part of the Anishinaabe Nation, whose traditional territory encompasses 3.9 million acres of southern Ontario. On February 28 1820, Treaty 22, which covers Oakville lands at 16 and 12 Mile Creeks, was signed. It is because of this Treaty that Oakville exists today.
